Enjoy Maupin

It’s true that our river activities are what Maupin is most famous for, but the adventure doesn’t stop there. Our communities are spread across an epic and varied landscape that allow for a range of opportunities to be active during your getaway. Enjoy our area’s wonderful climate while you embark on these rural Oregon adventures!

The Maupin area is home to hundreds of bird species that can be seen year-round. Over 260 species of birds have been spotted here according to the Wasco County eBird Hotspot, with over 100 species in Maupin City Park, according to the Maupin City Park eBird Hotspot report. Osprey migrate to Maupin in the spring to nest and rear their young through July. You can view the Osprey along the Lower Deschutes Access Road.

The East Cascades Audubon Society specializes in Central Oregon ornithology. Visit their website for maps and information on birding in the Maupin area, including the Wasco County Field Checklist and American Birding Association’s Central Oregon Bird News.

Pine Meadows Golf Course, located in Pine Hollow, is a nice, green and well-maintained 9-hole course. It is located on the beautiful Eastside of Mt. Hood in Tygh Valley, near Wamic. This course features narrow fairways and water hazards, but its real claim to fame is for having the second toughest hole in Oregon—Number 2!— a 212-yard par three, nicknamed The Hole From Hell. Amenities include: pro-shop, snack bar, rental clubs and carts, driving range, putting green, and chipping area. The Pine Hollow Lakeside Resort and RV Park is also near by.

Maupin is only 20 minutes away from uncrowded, fantastic backcountry trails in the Mt. Hood National Forest – perfect for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, skijoring and snowmobiling. Here’s a few places we recommend.

Billy Bob Snow Park – This area is a shared use corridor. There is access to ungroomed ski trails and groomed snowmobile trails. Trails are primitive. Directions: From Dufur, OR take Dufur Mill Road (Forest Road 44) west for about 16.5 miles to the trailhead.



McCubbins Gulch – Not a designated snow park but offers miles of trails covered with snow in the winter. Located approximately 50 miles southeast of Portland take Hwy 26 south to Hwy 216 east to Forest Service Road 2110, McCubbins Gulch is a hidden gem for snowsports.

GrassCar racing is an exciting and entertaining form of motor racing where daring drivers actually race riding lawnmowers. The Sportsman’s GrassCar Racing Club is based in Wamic, Oregon. The Stockyard (formerly Sportsman’s Pub & Grub), is the club’s main sponsor, providing the track as well as food & beer for the spectators. Yoga is for everyone! At Canyon Wren Wellness Center, classes combine (or alternate between) several Hatha yoga styles, including “Bikram,” “Flow” and “Yin.” All classes are designed to be beginner-friendly, yet challenging enough for advanced students. They also offer a chair-based yoga class which is especially suitable for those who are unable to perform floor or standing poses due to injuries, illness or age. The Historical Maupin GeoTour is operated by the Maupin Area Chamber of Commerce. This tour offers Geocachers the opportunity to learn about the history of Central Oregon and the Maupin Area. The tour consists of 12 identified Geocaches. Complete the 12 Cache Passport and the first 250 receive a custom Maupin Area Chamber of Commerce GeoCoin. For more info, check out the Geotour page.

McCubbins Gulch OHV has over 30 miles of trails for dirt bike and ATV fun. The trails are maintained with the help of Mt. Scott Motorcycle Club and Hurricane Racing, and are open April 1 through November 31 (closing temporarily during fire season). Vehicle permits are required and all trails that are open to motorized vehicles are also open to mountain bikers and hikers.
